Most side hustle content skips the only question that matters: compared to what?

An extra $200 a month sounds good until you count the hours. US private-sector average hourly earnings were $37.62 in July 2026. If a hustle takes 20 hours to produce that $200, it pays $10 an hour. You’d have done better with overtime, a better-paid job, or nothing at all.

That benchmark is the spine of this section. Not because everyone can earn the average, but because knowing it stops you accepting far less by accident.

You want to understand passive income properly. What’s actually passive and what isn’t — the term is used loosely enough to be misleading.

Three tests before you start anything

The hourly test. Estimate total hours honestly, including travel, admin, messaging customers, and the time spent waiting for work. Divide the money by that. Compare against $37.62 and against what an extra hour at your existing job pays.

The ceiling test. Can this grow, or is it linear forever? Trading hours for money caps out at the hours you have. Something that builds an asset — an audience, a skill, a product — has a different shape even if it pays worse at first.

The stop test. What happens if you stop for a month? A hustle that collapses immediately is a second job. That’s fine, as long as you know that’s what you bought.

What to do with the money

This is the part most side-hustle advice never reaches, and it’s where the money is actually made or lost.

Extra income aimed at a card balance charging around 21% is worth far more than the same income sitting in a savings account paying 0.38%. If you’re carrying card debt, the highest-return use of a side hustle isn’t investing it. It’s clearing the balance. If you’re not, a decent savings account at least stops it being eroded while you decide.

Earning it is only half the exercise. Where it lands decides what it was worth.
